All donations made through this page go to No on Prop. 8 (http://www.noonprop8.com) to fund their campaign against Proposition 8, which would amend the CA state constitution to remove the rights of same-sex couples to marry and define marriage as being between a man and a woman.
I believe in the humanity and equality of all people. That's what marriage equality comes down to, acknowledging that GLBTQI couples and heterosexual couples are equal and deserve equal access to the 1,138 rights granted to married couples by federal law. I believe, and the CA and CT supreme courts recognized, that civil unions and domestic partnerships constitute separate and inferior institutions, not separate but equal.
In Loving v. Virginia, the Supreme Court wrote, “Marriage is one of basic civil rights of man,” [sic] fundamental to our very existence and survival…. To deny this fundamental freedom on so unsupportable a basis as the racial classifications embodied in these statutes, classifications so directly subversive of the principle of equality at the heart of the Fourteenth Amendment, is surely to deprive all the State’s citizens of liberty without due process of law. The Fourteenth Amendment requires that the freedom of choice to marry not be restricted by invidious racial discrimination. Under our Constitution, the freedom to marry, or not marry, a person of another race resides with the individual and cannot be infringed by the State."
If marriage is a "basic civil right" and a "fundamental freedom," we need to recognize that everyone, GLBTQI and straight, possesses that right and freedom. Donate to No on Prop. 8 and do your part to fund the fight for equality!
