As many of you know, this Spring, the California Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry under the California Constitution. As a result, thousands of loving and committed couples were able to get married in California. The first to do so were Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin ages 83 and 87. Phyllis and Del have been together for 55 years!!
Some Californians are apparently threatened by the love Phyllis and Del share, and have introduced Proposition 8, an initiative measure on the 2008 California General Election ballot that, if passed, would change the California Constitution to eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry in California. A new section would be added stating “only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.”
This is not just a California issue. It is a civil rights issue. We are all lucky enough to live in a country with a promise of equality for everyone. We should do all we can to protect that equality from the forces of bigotry and hate. Only a few months ago, Prop. 8 looked like it was heading for certain defeat. However, conservative and religious groups from across the nation have been pouring money into the state and running an unscrupulous campaign of misinformation in an attempt to scare the public (including commercials asserting that failure to pass Prop 8 will mean that school children will be encouraged by their teachers to become gay). Sadly, these tactics appear to be working. The polls are now predicting that Prop 8 will pass. The public needs to be informed about the truth of Prop 8.
No On Prop 8, Equality For All is the coalition that is leading the fight to defeat Prop 8 and defend the fundamental right to marry for all Californians. Help us help them. With the election only weeks away, the time to act is now. Please contribute to our fundraising page today!
