Dear friends and family,
The ballot description for Proposition 8 makes it perfectly clear. Prop 8 "eliminates the right of same sex couples to marry."
As many of you know, in only four days, Californians will vote on Prop 8, which would amend our state’s constitution to eliminate the right of same sex couples to marry. This is a personal issue for me, because I will be affected by this constitutional amendment for the rest of my life. In other words, this election may well determine whether or not I can get married and enjoy the same basic rights and responsibilities that many of you enjoy.
Many of you remember the day this past Spring when the California Supreme Court finally ruled that it was wrong to prevent same-sex couples from getting married. The highest court in the state said that gay people deserve to be treated equally, and that discrimination against gay couples is simply wrong. But after losing in the Court of laws, the religious right is betting on the court of public opinion. And this time, they’re trying to write discrimination into the constitution. We must not let them win.
This is a hugely important battle, because California has always been a bellwether for the rest of the country. I moved to California six years ago so I could go to law school here, and fight for justice and equality. Now, some people in the very state I’ve made my home are trying to strip equality away from people like me.
I’m asking you for your help today. Right now, right this moment, we are on the verge of making history by defeating this dangerous proposition. You may have read that the polls are running neck and neck. People who have seen both sides' ads are polling against Prop 8, and this shows that our ads are working. We can defeat this mean-spirited proposition. But to do so, we need to make sure that we raise as much as we can to keep our ads on the airwaves just as much as the other side.
I’m giving this fight everything I’ve got. I’ve already donated a whole paycheck of my salary to the cause--more than I've ever donated to any other cause. And I’m been phone banking and precinct-walking, talking to voters and soliciting volunteers. But I can’t do it alone; I need your help. If you think that I deserve the same rights that you enjoy, take a stand for equality, and please give generously by clicking the green "contribute" tab at the top of this page.
