Tammy Duckworth is someone that all Americans can be proud of.
A self-made woman, Duckworth distinguished herself academically by receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in PolySci from the University of Hawaii then a Master of Arts degree in International Affairs from George Washington University. It was during her graduate study at George Washington University that she joined the ROTC.
Following school she joined the Army Reserve and trained as a helicopter pilot. In 1996 she joined the Illinois National Guard.
While working toward a Ph.D in political science at Northern Illinois University she was deployed to Iraq.
On November 12, 2004, she was flying a mission in Iraq in a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter which came under attack and was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade. She sustained major injuries, losing both legs and all but losing her right arm.
She is now running for the US House of Representatives in Illinois' sixth district - a seat which is being vacated by the incumbent. She is running on a platform of improved access to health care, reformation of the No Child Left Behind act and an honest, reality-based examination and overhaul of our Iraq War policy.
Her opponent, Illinois State Senator and chickenhawk Pete Roskam, has shamed Americans everywhere by accusing Duckworth - the double-amputee Iraq War vet - of advocating a policy of "cut and run" with regards to Iraq. His campaign has accused Duckworth of being "unhinged" and the National Republican Congressional Committee has spent several hundred thousand dollars on mailings to voters assailing her.
I believe that Tammy Duckworth has a good chance of winning this congressional seat for the Dems. I believe candidates with strong, sound stances deserve our support, and this is a race where your dollars can make the difference. Please give what you can to this critical cause.
