Thanks for visiting this page, which I created so that my friends and family both here in Los Angeles and elsewhere can help me raise money to defeat Proposition 8. If it passes on Nov. 4, gay people will be stripped of the right to get married in California, which was granted by the California Supreme Court back in June.
In my eyes, this isn't just about marriage, it's about simple equal rights, and advancing the rights of gay people more fundamentally across the country-- and world, for that matter. To lose on this ballot measure would mean writing discrimination into another state's Constitution, and potentially turning back the clock on the fundamental equal rights struggle of our time for an entire generation.
The other side-- funded mainly by religious groups like the Mormons, Catholics, Knights of Columbus, Focus on the Family, et al.--is out-fundraising our side 3 to 2.
The New York Times just published an editorial on Prop 8 that gives some background and frames the issue well: "The measure would overturn a firmly grounded State Supreme Court decision that said everyone has a basic right 'to establish a legally recognized family with the person of one’s choice'...It is our fervent hope that Californians will reject this mean-spirited attempt to embed second-class treatment of one group of citizens in the State Constitution."
The money you contribute to No on 8/Equality for All, the organization I have been volunteering for, will be spent NOW to make media buys throughout the state. Commercials are proven to be the most effective means of getting a message across to voters, especially for a ballot proposition like this, and even $50 can buy a couple of commercial spots in a market like Palm Springs. If you had been yearning for a celebrity endorsement, Brad Pitt recently contributed $100,000 to the No on 8 Campaign. C'mon, you know you want to join me and Brad on this hot bandwagon blazing a trail for equal rights!
I would really appreciate it if you could dig into your wallet and give anything you can to help me defeat this unfair Proposition. You can enter any amount in the box next to the green "Contribute" button above the wedding bears.
Your help is dearly appreciated!
