Reformer of the Month

DFER's mission is to encourage a more productive dialogue within the Democratic Party on the need to fundamentally reform American public education. Each month, we identify candidates who are standing up for meaningful reform and innovation, and we help demonstrate the broad base of support for their efforts. Please click on each candidate to learn more, and give as generously as you can.

May 2014: Alisha Morgan (GA Superintendent candidate)The first African-American woman to represent her district, Alisha has spent six terms in the GA House fighting for kids. She’s sponsored bills supporting college and career-ready standards, public charter schools, and increased accountability.

May 2014: Marshall Tuck (CA superintendent candidiate)Formerly of Green Dot, Tuck is the only candidate with a record of increasing grad rates, improving achievement, and turning around failing schools.

April 2014: Margo Davidson State Rep. Margo Davidson (PA-164) has supported high-quality public charter schools and a tax increase to fully fund her state's public schools while in office, and her campaign is being pounded by the state's teachers union.

April 2014: Shavar Jeffries Newark mayoral candidate Shavar Jeffries has dedicated his career to helping kids as head of Newark’s School Advisory Board and founding board president of TEAM Academy Charter. His opponent, Ras Baraka, promises to undo progress made during Cory Booker’s tenure.

March 2014: Mary Landrieu and Kay Hagan Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA), a powerful member of the Appropriations Committee, and Senator Kay Hagan (D-NC) a member of the Senate HELP Committee who has supported legislation on accountability and teacher effectiveness, are facing tough elections in red states in 2014.

February 2014: Erika Beltran Texas State Board of Education candidate Erika Beltran is a former teacher running for the District 13 (Dallas/Fort Worth) seat to impact the policies facing schools at the state level.

January 2014: Christian Mitchell State Rep. Christian Mitchell (IL-26) has led the fight for education funding reform and the replication and expansion of quality charter schools in his district.
